A vision for the economy
The campaign to secure Canadian supply chains in the energy sector is part of Unifor’s larger effort to work with government to develop industrial strategies to ensure Canada has a strategic plan to build an economy that works for workers. Made-in-Canada products and services, including CANDU, are a key component for a resilient economy that can weather international instability.
Nuclear energy is a crucial component of Canada’s energy mix
Without strategic investments in the expansion of nuclear energy generation it is unlikely Canada will meet its electrical energy needs, make the transition to electrification of our energy infrastructure, and/or meet our international commitments on mitigating climate change.
Electrical energy is the basis for the sustainable expansion of biofuel, ammonia, hydrogen, and lower greenhouse gas emitting production in the chemical and plastics sector. Without expansion of electrical generation to cover inevitable transition in these sectors, electric vehicles adoption, and reducing emissions from industrial production, it is unlikely Canada will be able to reduce its emission to meet climate change policy objectives.
Unifor is fighting to expand good jobs at CANDU, domestically and internationally
To reach Canada’s nuclear energy goals, Unifor supports:
- Maintaining and growing domestic production, supply chains, and procurement of nuclear power and isotopes to ensure Canada’s energy security and maximize economic benefits.
- Ensuring large or smaller-scale nuclear meets our industrial energy needs and establishes Canadian-developed technology as world leading.
- Integrating nuclear energy production and inputs with critical mineral production strategies for a comprehensive resource management approach.
- Advancing made, designed, and developed in Canada CANDU technology.
- Expanded export of end-to-end made in Canada nuclear technology that is safe, reliable, and built on secure supply chains.
- Continued outreach to the public on nuclear energy generation, byproduct creation such as nuclear isotopes, planning, and facility management and safety.
- Ensuring increased funding to support nuclear energy research including long-term storage.
